From Troubled to Safe House

Life for a young teen girl is very difficult in communities in Northern Ghana. For a girl who lives in these regions, every day is filled with long days of housework and farming, carrying heavy loads and sometimes abuse or neglect. They have little hope for a better future.

However, for girls that are part of the OM in Ghana Safe House program, their days look a little different. The girls wake early and begin the day with morning devotions. They have a period of doing household chores and cleaning before they have breakfast together. Then their skills training starts.

After lunch they begin a second session of skills training before dinner. Meals at the Safe house are regular and nutritious: a big change from their eating in their communities. Because of the regular, nutritious food, all the girls are getting healthier and stronger. Their evenings are times for one-on-one counselling and bible study.

Mama Vero is the house mother living with and supervising the girls. Currently there are 9 girls in the Safe house, all from communities in the north and come from a Muslim background. While their day focuses on sewing skills and tailoring training, Mama Vero is hoping to introduce basic literacy and numeracy skills as well because some of the girls cannot read, write or count.

One highlight for the OM team at the Safe house was seeing the girls give their lives to Jesus through the prayers and Bible study. After further study in the Bible on the life of new believers, the girls themselves asked for baptism. They were baptised and continue to grow in their faith as they study the Word of God.

Please pray for the girls to hold on to their faith in Jesus, that those that come from Muslim homes would remain steadfast in their new faith. Pray that God would provide for all their needs. Pray for the OM workers in the Safe House that God would continue to supply all their needs, including the daily strength to live with, disciple, coach, counsel, mentor and love these girls.
