Bold Generosity

A Journey of Faith and Fundraising with the Freedom Challenge

At The Freedom Challenge, we are a movement of passionate women who challenge ourselves physically to raise funds and awareness, disrupting the cycles of oppression and poverty that often result in human trafficking. Fundraising is a crucial part of this mission, yet for many, it feels just as daunting as the physical challenges themselves. That’s why we sat down with seasoned Freedom Sister, Laura Wagner, to discuss generosity, faith, and the power of inviting others into this journey.

A Decade of Commitment

Laura’s journey with The Freedom Challenge began ten years ago with a mission trip to India—her first time traveling so far from home. It was there that she saw firsthand the impact of the work we support, opening her heart to the deep need and the powerful ways God was moving. This trip led her to her first Freedom Challenge event in 2016, a climb in the Grand Tetons. Since then, she has participated in multiple challenges and mission trips, continuing to raise funds and awareness for this cause.

The Theology of Generosity

One of the most profound shifts in Laura’s approach to fundraising came from Proverbs 19:17: “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done.” Understanding generosity as a form of worship changed her perspective. She began to see fundraising not as asking for money but as inviting others into the blessing of giving. “I realized I was withholding blessings from others by not asking them to participate,” Laura shared.

Overcoming the Fear of Fundraising

Like many, Laura initially hesitated to ask others to contribute. “I worried that people would think I should just fund it myself,” she admitted. But she learned that fundraising is not about personal needs—it’s about partnering with God’s work. By being clear about her own investment—covering her registration, training, and gear—she was able to confidently invite others to join in generosity.

Laura also reframed fundraising as an act of faith. “It’s like climbing a mountain—you don’t know how you’ll reach the top, but you trust the process.” Time and again, she has seen God provide, often in unexpected ways. She recalls Freedom Sisters who reached their goals at the last moment, reinforcing the truth that God moves when we step out in faith.

A Generous Life: Labor, Influence, Finances, Expertise

Generosity isn’t just about money. Laura embodies a holistic approach to generosity through what Tracy calls LIFE stewardship:

  • Labor – Giving her time by leading Freedom Challenge events, supporting others, and serving in her community.

  • Influence – Using her social circles to invite others into the mission, hosting events like pickleball nights and men’s poker gatherings to raise awareness and funds.

  • Finances – Recognizing that all resources belong to God and choosing to invest in Kingdom work.

  • Expertise – Sharing her knowledge and experience to guide other women in their fundraising journeys.

Encouragement for New Fundraisers

For women stepping into their first challenge, Laura offers this encouragement: You are not alone. The Freedom Challenge community is here to walk with you. Fundraising isn’t just about meeting a financial goal—it’s an opportunity for growth, trust, and experiencing God’s provision. Every dollar raised represents a life impacted. $150 can help set one woman or child on the pathway to freedom.

Her practical advice? Make a list of potential donors, pray over it, and boldly invite people to join. “Don’t talk yourself out of the ask—give others the opportunity to be part of something bigger.”
